About SmartCORE
SmartCORE in a nutshell
In North-West Europe, more energy communities are emerging to improve our energy future and drive the transition towards renewable energy. By producing electricity from sources such as solar and wind, they now face the challenge of integrating this power effectively into the existing energy system.
Electricity is not always needed when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, and the grid is not yet fully prepared to handle these new energy flows. The SmartCORE project helps reduce this imbalance by introducing innovative energy management solutions for energy communities across North-West Europe.
Bringing together a transdisciplinary consortium of academics, energy communities, and IT developers, SmartCORE will set up tailored energy management tools and methods, making feasible self-consumption strategies such as energy sharing, along with the provision of grid services like balancing and congestion management. The project partners will also raise awareness and engage end-users, fostering the cultural shift needed to strengthen both the independence and resilience of our energy systems.
Energy communities play a central role in ensuring a fair and democratic energy transition. Yet, despite their steady growth in North-West Europe, they still lack the scale to implement processes typically reserved for large corporations. SmartCORE will support energy communities by sharing knowledge and expertise, allowing them to advance their flexibility strategies.
SmartCORE in action
We are advancing our objectives through the following key activities:

Five pilot projects
Energy communities are working closely together with academia and software developers in Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands to advance transnational energy management solutions that will be replicable across diverse contexts.

Energy management strategy
A set of practical guides and training materials will be developed to shape the SmartCORE energy management solution. This solution builds on the collaborative experience of pilots and academic research, integrating both social and technical dimensions.

Hands-on trainings
30 energy communities across the target countries will benefit from a modular capacity-building programme. In addition, 5 selected energy communities will take part in a buddy-system training, learning first-hand knowledge from experimented initiatives.
SmartCORE on the map
We work across five countries in North-West Europe: Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.
We foster transnational cooperation for a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
